Functional Analysis

Title: eScholarship and open access: A functional analysis of an academic repository.

Created: October, 2016

Course number: LIS 60010 The Information Landscape.

Subjects: California Digital Library—eScholarship.

     Open access publishing.

     Functional analysis.

Program learning outcome: 3. Analyze and engage in the changing cultural, educational, and social roles and responsibilities of librarians/information professionals and the environments they work in within the global society.
     4. Evaluate systems and technologies relevant to a particular information context.

One of my early forays into the study of digital libraries, this project demonstrates my skills in conceptual analysis, written communication, and concept mapping. Although some of the factual information is now out of date, the project still meets PLO 4 in its evaluation and analysis of the interactions of systems, technologies, and other factors in the context of an institutional repository. It also touches on PLO 3 in its discussion of the repository librarians’ role in negotiating the multiple challenges of open access publication.

This analysis addresses professional standards for cataloging and metadata by demonstrating my aptitude for strong written communication of complex concepts, an understanding of larger trends in information systems, and an orientation toward public service.
